Aging Is Not for Wimps

Bring Courage, Curiosity and Creativity

Aging is Not for Wimps (NFW):  Designed Specifically for Seniors

What is NFW?

NFW (Aging is Not for Wimps) is an invitation to step into who you really are and live the life you choose.  As we age, we move into new stages of life development.  Each stage brings its own gifts and challenges, and often we are more focused on the challenges than the gifts.  At NFW, we  honor the experience of each of you as you age.  We provide support that helps build the strengths you already have and develop new ones.

NFW is not another product to buy or a task list of things we should do.  It’s an adventure. We know that you are creative and curious people, taking one more step forward on your life journey.  With NFW, we find that age brings more love and joy and wisdom.

At NFW, we accept all the thoughts and feelings that come with the experience of aging.  We use coaching tools and techniques, classes, discussion groups and resources to explore it together, so you can find the path with heart, the path that works for you.

About NFW

I never anticipated that aging would be inherently difficult. I had this notion that stepping into the role of a wise elder would come naturally, bringing a sense of contentment. At times, I still hold onto that belief.

Yet, no matter what our preconceived notions about growing older, the reality often diverges from our expectations. The aspects that trouble me – new aches and pains, the realization of being classified as ‘higher risk’ for Covid-19, or patronizing remarks about my partner and me being a ‘cute little couple’ – might not faze you in the same way. Nevertheless, for most of us, there are unforeseen and disquieting revelations along this journey.”

“I invite you to connect with your own deep wisdom…”

Dr. Gene Cohen has good news for us.  He is a psychiatrist, gerontologist, and director of the Center on Aging, Health, and Humanities at George Washington University.  Author of the book The Mature Mind: The Positive Power of the Aging Brain, he has identified four stages of adult development.

* Midlife Re-evaluation (mid-30s to mid-60s)
* Liberation (mid-50s to mid-70s)
* Summing Up (mid-60s through 80s)
* Encore (late 70s to end of life)

Relying on neuroscience and extensive research, Cohen makes the case that our older years are not ones of inevitable decline, but that our brains actually continue developing and offer increased capacity for creativity and wisdom.  I was delighted to read his book, which highlights many stories of everyday people who continue, growing, learning, and contributing all of their lives.

I don’t plan to convince you that’s true.  I do invite you to pause and reconnect with your own wisdom. I invite you to join me and explore your own experience and beliefs about aging, in community with other elders, as you discern your own path.
